Clever - PUXD

For this project, my Purdue UX Design team partnered with Clever to help them design a new MFA log in factor for K-12 schools. We were tasked with creating a system that was not only secure, but also engaging and memorable for the students. We were told to be very exploratory and come up with a lot of ideas to narrow down into 1 final solution.

See our Final Presentation for a more simplified and comprehensive version of the process. For the purposes of this portfolio, I will only detail the aspects of this project that I helped with the most.

Design Process

Our final deliverables that we sent off to our Clever sponsors included:

  1. A high-fidelity MFA workflow including onboarding, daily use and troubleshooting

  2. Supplemental tools/workflows for additional tools needed for troubleshooting/onboarding

Preliminary Research

Goals

  • Understand Clever's current system and the steps that students currently take to log in

  • Learn more about MFAs in general and brainstorm ideas for unique solutions

Activities

  • Desk Research

  • Initial Interviews with teachers using Clever in schools (provided by our sponsors)

Insights

  • Clever uses an animal and food memory log in MFA which is not very secure

  • Badge log in which can be lost or stolen

  • Troubleshooting takes too long in class

Ideation & Sketching

Since we were told to be very exploratory with this new MFA, my team came up with 35 different ideas to consider. We then narrowed these ideas down by receiving opinions from our sponsors as well as our own workshops and teacher insights. After narrowing down to 6, we took our remaining ideas and made storyboards to narrow again to 3 ideas.

Goals

  • Ensure we have the most creative and reliable MFA solution

  • Flesh out ideas and discover potential limitations

After making walkthroughs and user flows of each idea, we settled on:

  1. Behavior Analysis

  2. Building Blocks

  3. Gesture Analysis

Insights

  • Settled on these 3 since the other ideas were too similar to other factors Clever already uses, could not be used without another factor, or were not creative enough for our sponsors.

Mid Fidelity Walkthroughs

Goals

  • Construct models that could be used for further testing and decision on the final solution

  • Get a better idea of what the UI would look in the Clever style and on a webpage

Behavior Analysis

  • Background MFA that reads students’ mouse tracking and reaction time

  • Consists of a whack-a-mole style game for onboarding to measure movements

Building Blocks

  • Personalized brick design MFA acting as a secondary password

  • Build and remember brick combination, cannot be the same as another student

Gesture Analysis

  • Recognizes hand gestures in a specific order

  • Student receives their combination and remembers the order of the signs when they log in

Concept Testing

Goals

  • Narrow down to 1 final idea to make interactive

  • Assess usability issues with designs and make changes

Insights

  • Behavior Analysis

    • Feasibility concerns

    • Potential distraction in class

  • Building Blocks

    • Familiarity concern

    • Difficulty to recall for kids

  • Gesture Analysis

    • Security concerns

    • Not accessible for disabled students

Final Prototype

Our final design included all necessary screens for the Building Blocks MFA. Our sponsors made the final decision on which solution to go with based on teacher feedback and their preferences. Below is the walkthrough video that we constructed using our figma screens that shows the onboarding process of using the MFA.
